Rules to Remember When Buying

Discuss the level of required protection with your insurance.

A fire matrix or building occupancy design will clarify allot of the system and device design parameters and requirements.

Detailed drawings of your building in CAD or PDF will be extremely helpful with planning and final design layout of the detection system.

Do you need remote notification from the fire panel to the fire brigade in the event of a fire?

Request your 6 monthly device service to be scheduled and setup a service level agreement with the supplier.

Do you need gas suppression for your server room and remember to mention if you are running storage banks in the server racks.

The supplier will immediately change the gas suppression discharge nozzles to slow release nozzles to prevent damaging your storage drive in the event of a discharge.

Ensure you call the supplier if you ever install additional cable into your server room as he will need to seal the room again to prevent the suppression gas from escaping in the event of a discharge.

The Shopping Help Guide You Need

Ensure you understand the design your installer presents to you.

If anything is unclear on any of the device selections, functions or location now is a good time to discuss it.

Always remember the installer will always follow the code of practice.

There is no shortcut or a way around this. It is a legal requirement for the installer to follow the SANS regulations when installing the detection system. The code of practice protects both of you in the unfortunate event of a fire.

The device type and device location will all depend on the requirements of the fire matrix, building design engineer or the requirements of the insurance.

It is imperative you discuss the requirements with your installing company and to ensure you understand the different detection design levels as per the insurance, fire matrix or building occupancy requirements.

Design class levels vary and have sub classes for each type. We will only look at the main protection classes below to clarify.

L = Life saving and focusses on evacuation and early detection.

M = Manual systems where an employee or co-worker will see the smoke or fire and trigger the fire alarm system.

P = Property protection systems where the system in design focusses on your property.

On many occasions the M class is mixed with the L or P designs to meet requirements. It
